Macmillan Support Centre opens at Bolton One

Cancer service located at community health centre

A new drop-in support centre has launched at Bolton One, providing support for anyone affected by cancer.

The service, run by Macmillan Cancer Support, offers a range of information about all aspects of cancer, provided by trained staff and volunteers. Additional services on offer include access to a Macmillan benefits adviser, skin and make-up master classes and educational programmes, as well as signposting to other support services.

The service is located in a prominent and accessible location near Bolton One’s pharmacy and is open from Monday to Friday, 9.00am-4.30pm.

Making a difference

Bolton’s Macmillan cancer information and support service manager, Sue Summerfield said: “We’re very excited about the new centre at Bolton One and believe it will make a real difference to local people affected by cancer.

"Everyone’s experience of cancer is unique, but being given the right information at the right time and being able to access a range of support services or just knowing what to do to help you feel better can make such a difference. This is what the service aims to do.”

Partnership working

Partnership working has been a key part of the project. Macmillan Cancer Support has been working in partnership with Bolton Hospice, Bolton People Affected by Cancer, and Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group to develop the service, with support from Community Health Partnerships (CHP) as head tenant.

Macmillan Cancer Support is taking over previously-under-utilised space within the centre, resulting in more-effective use of space.

Ann-Marie Grant, CHP programme manager for developments, said: “As head tenant, CHP is committed to ensuring the space within our buildings is utilised effectively. It is also great to see such a fantastic service for local people being provided from one of our buildings”
